After an early briefing at Freedom Hostel, you’ll embark on a self-driven 4WD journey across the island’s “Beach Highway” (75 Mile Beach). Discover stunning highlights like the crystal-clear Lake McKenzie 💧, the refreshing Eli Creek 🌊, and the historic SS Maheno Shipwreck 🚢. You’ll also explore ancient rainforests at Central Station 🌳 and enjoy nights camping just metres from the beach under the stars ✨. The tour culminates with a visit to the deep Lake Wabby 🏊‍♀️ before heading back to Rainbow Beach. Keep an eye out for incredible wildlife throughout! 🐾

Itinerary

Morning Kick-off & Ferry to K’gari:

  • Start your day early with a quick check that everyone has their essentials.
  • Enjoy a short drive to Inskip Point to meet your ferry.
  • Keep an eye out for dolphins, dugongs, and other marine life during the scenic ferry crossing to the World Heritage-listed K’gari.

Northbound on 75 Mile Beach:

  • Once on the island, head north along the famous 75 Mile Beach, also known as the island’s “Beach Highway.”
  • Spend time at the refreshing Eli Creek, a must-visit spot.
  • Continue along the coastline to the iconic SS Maheno Shipwreck and learn about its fascinating history.

Inland Oasis & Iconic Lake:

  • Drive inland, navigating K’gari’s sandy tracks, until you reach Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie).
  • Take your time to relax, swim, and soak in the crystal-clear waters of this incredibly stunning and photographed lake.

Rainforest & Logging History:

  • (Tide Dependent) Head to Central Station, the old logging headquarters.
  • Your guide will share insights into the island’s logging past, its towering rainforests, and the tranquil waters of Wanggoolba Creek.
  • Enjoy an optional short walk through the rainforest along the creek, meeting your guide at Pile Valley.

Return Journey:

  • From Pile Valley, drive back out to the Eastern Beach and along 75 Mile Beach to catch your ferry back to the mainland.
  • Arrive back in Rainbow Beach around 4:30 pm.

Pick up & Departure times 

The tour departs from Rainbow Beach, with add-on shuttle.

Pickup in Rainbow Beach is 7:30 am*​ 

Passengers returning to Rainbow Beach can expect to be dropped off around 4:30 pm.

We want our guests to be as comfortable as possible throughout the day and therefore recommend they bring sun protection such as a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen as well as insect repellent. For those wishing to swim, bring along your swimwear and a towel. Don’t forget to bring along a camera to capture your memories from the day and a refillable water bottle to help prevent waste. Morning tea and lunch are included in your fare, however some guests like to bring a long a few snacks of their own.
