  • Passenger ferry: SeaLink’s fast catamarans run from the Breakwater Terminal in Townsville to Nelly Bay in about 20 to 25 minutes ⛴️ Our Magnetic Island Return Ferry ticket isn’t tied to a set departure, so just turn up and hop on.
  • With a car: Magnetic Island Ferries runs the vehicle ferry from South Townsville to Nelly Bay (about 40 minutes). Vehicle bookings are essential.

  • Public bus: route 250 links Picnic Bay, the Nelly Bay ferry terminal, Arcadia and Horseshoe Bay, and is timed to meet the ferries 🚌
  • Hire a car: open-top “Barbie cars”, topless Jeeps, 4WDs and regular cars are all available in Nelly Bay 🚗
  • Scooters and e-bikes: a fun way to get from bay to bay. Check the licence rules when you book.

  • The Forts Walk: WWII forts, big views and wild koalas 🐨
  • Rock wallabies at Geoffrey Bay, best early morning or late afternoon
  • Beach days at Horseshoe Bay and Alma Bay 🏖
  • The snorkel trails at Geoffrey Bay and Nelly Bay 🐠

Please don’t feed the wallabies. They’re wild animals and human food can make them sick.

The Forts Walk is the best-known spot 🐨 Go early in the day when it’s cooler and the koalas are more active, and look up into the gum trees. The bus stops at The Forts, so it’s easy to get to. Keep your distance and never touch or feed them.

Magnetic Island gets around 320 days of sunshine a year ☀️ June to September is dry and warm, and also the busiest time. Stinger season runs roughly November to May, so wear a stinger suit in the water, swim between the flags, and use the stinger nets at Horseshoe Bay and Picnic Bay when they’re up 🪼

We’d suggest 2 to 3 nights: one day for the Forts Walk, the wallabies and the beaches, and one for a reef trip 🐠 Short on time? It’s an easy day trip from Townsville on the ferry. Stay longer if you want to slow right down ✌️
