The vast majority of travelers enjoy their trip without ever seeing a venomous creature. Your main safety priorities on the island are practicing safe 4WD driving habits and following standard dingo-safety rules.
You don’t need prior 4WD experience to drive on a Tag-Along tour, as the guides give you a full safety briefing beforehand—but you must meet these strict criteria to get behind the wheel:
Age Limits: Most backpacker tour operators require you to be at least 21 years old to drive their vehicles.
License Requirements: You must hold a valid, full/open driver’s license from your home country and have held it for at least 12–24 months.
International Travelers: If your license is not written in English, you must carry an official International Driving Permit (IDP) alongside your original hard-copy license. Digital copies or photocopies are not accepted.
The Golden Rule: Driving on the beach carries the exact same legal blood-alcohol limits ($0.05$ in Queensland) and police presence as the mainland. If you are driving the morning after a camp party, you must be completely sober.
