Sydney Tours & Activities

Sydney is where most East Coast trips begin. Climb the Harbour Bridge, kayak to the Opera House at sunrise, learn to surf on a day trip from Bondi, or head out to the Blue Mountains, the Hunter Valley or Jervis Bay. Every tour lists exactly what’s included, so you can make the most of the harbour city.

  • Walk the Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk: about 6 km of clifftops, beaches and ocean pools 🌊
  • Wander around Circular Quay and The Rocks for classic Opera House and Harbour Bridge views
  • Picnic in the Royal Botanic Garden next to the Opera House
  • Explore Newtown on foot for street art, op shops and cheap eats

Not free, but great value: the ferry from Circular Quay to Manly is a normal public transport fare and one of the best harbour trips in town ⛴️

Sydney works all year round ☀️ Spring (September to November) and autumn (March to May) are mild and a bit quieter. Summer (December to February) is beach season and the busiest time.
Humpback whales pass Sydney from about May to November. Numbers peak in late June and July on the way north, and from September to November you’ll often see mums and calves heading back south 🐋

  • Tap on and tap off with an Opal card, or just use your contactless Visa, Mastercard or Amex card, phone or watch. It works on trains, metro, buses, ferries and light rail 🚆
  • Use the same card or device for the whole trip so you get transfer discounts and the daily and weekly fare caps
  • Off-peak trips on trains, metro, buses and light rail are cheaper
  • On the Manly ferry you only need to tap on

The quickest way is the train ✈️ The T8 Airport & South Line stations are right under the domestic and international terminals, and trains run straight to Central and the other city stations. Tap on with your Opal card or contactless card.
Heads-up: the airport stations charge a station access fee on top of the normal train fare. If you’re travelling light, it’s cheaper to get to Mascot station and catch the train from there.

Most backpackers spend 3 to 5 nights in Sydney before heading up the East Coast. Stay longer if you want to add day trips like the Hunter Valley wineries, Port Stephens or Jervis Bay and the dolphin cruise 🐬
Heading north next? A Greyhound East Coast pass lets you hop on and off all the way up the coast.
